Asha Kha is a Zaalan technologist and staunch Bogwynne supporter, though he left the colony and his clan to remain part of a thriving new stellar community. He took the E.C.S. over after the death of its founder Tsolmon Buluga some 7 years ago. Whilst Asha is motivated and hard-working, some believe that the E.C.S. is not going very well under his leadership. Rivals Starlyft Inc are taking a chunk of their business and his encouragement of the racing mentality within the organization has led to some pilots taking risks and losing deliveries. There are rumours of substance abuse, too, though PR has denied all allegations. |
There are a few big shipping companies, either crossing the empty Stream or catering to busier colonial routes. Their ships tend to be bulky and slow - a lot of goods are required in order to break. For smaller deliveries, this spurs the rise of smaller shipping services. Express Courier Services is a league of independent couriers that deliver across all colonial space. Reliable, honest and completely legal, E.C.S. couriers are the premier choice for fast mail and smaller goods delivery. For a premium fee, E.C.S. agents also double up as information runners, carrying sensitive and encrypted data from world to world and colony to colony.
E.C.S. couriers will also dabble in rescue jobs. A newly acquired arm of the E.C.S., the Fuel Rats Corporation, specializes in refueling or repairing stranded ships out there in the Stream. Both maintain their HQ at Embassy Station, in the middle of the Stream, nearest the densest Drift beacons.
These daring couriers aren't just typical space delivery professionals. They're also the fastest speed racers and adrenaline junkies in the sector. Every delivery is a new chance to set a new time, to find a new stellar shortcut, to minimize docking procedures. Bigger orders are split between contractors, at which point the job becomes a genuine race. E.C.S. meetings quite often turn into tight races or ops competitions, and several orbital facilities have been scavenged and adapted.
The focus on speed and nimbleness has saved more deliveries than it has put in jeopardy : the Cult of the All-Code and the Solarian Order alike have had trouble attacking E.C.S. convoys...
Every year, E.C.S. aspirants must undertake a series of three trials : a rally between far-flung stations in dangerous hyperspace conditions, a sublight race around Embassy HQ, and a planetary race in the wide canyons of the Hhrot's Proving Grounds. The rewards are the fame that comes with being a successful courier and racer, as well as a good cut of every job. Those who dally, however, are eventually stripped of their licence...
And even though each and every E.C.S. courier is a daring racinghead, there are very few accidents and 99% of deliveries are successful and on time.
