Very little is known about Vi Tulsa - quite a few people do not even believe her to be a real person, but instead a mere AI projection. Certainly few people have knowingly met her. The claims are that she was a Kalimshari colonist who was banished from the Ark and used her hacking skills to cobble together an army of other exiles and "take the fight to the system". The enigmatic elf claims that she has lost something of immense value during her banishment, and that it has motivated her in running the Fixers for many years. She is high on the list of most wanted criminals by Kalimshari and Coalition authorities - yet, interestingly, she has been knighted by the Hhrot. |
There are many mercenary and bounty hunting groups in the Stream; there are also pirates of all creeds. The entity calling itself Vi's Fixers claims to be none of that - but they may well really be all of the above.
A fairly new but already recurrent problem in the Stream, the Fixers effectively act as glory seekers, bounty hunters and thieves. What makes them notorious, in spite of their small size, is their modus operandi : they do not use sheer force, nor do they seek to infiltrate starports or docked ships. Instead, their hacking tools and specially designed shuttles cut into or dock with ships within the Drift (but not in normal hyperspace). Their cyberwarfare suite often prevents the ship from meaningfully detecting the intrusion, and most colonial vessels are ill prepared for such breaches. Once within the ship, the Fixers act as a regular but impressive special ops force : they steal, kidnap or even rescue people with minimal injuries and typically no loss of life.
Their daring and impressive record makes the Fixers favourites in the seedy underbellies of great colonial ports and cities - loss of life draws more attention and is hardly profitable. Some of the best thieves, hackers, and operatives work in employ of the Fixers. Their size is kept small and they are splintered in several cells that are seldom aware of one another (to avoid compromizing the entire operation if caught). They are masterminded through contact with the Fixers' administrative AI.
One does not join the Fixers - the Fixers finds prospective agents they deem skillful and receptive enough and recruits them. The heists that they have pulled off (including the theft of the Kalimshari warship Astoria and subsequent release of all personnel unharmed) have firmly set them in the collective imagination of entire colonies. Their success comes at a price, however. Shipping companies are adapting their ships to better meet this new threat, whereas lesser mercenary groups often parade as Fixers to get more business - and fail miserably at imitating their particular brand of operations. It is noted that no Starlyft vessel has been targeted by the Fixers - Starlyft suggests that they use proprietary ship systems and airlocks.
